Welcome to the homepage of the Black Notley Village History Recorder. Black Notley is a small village in the heart of Essex, that can trace its roots back to the domesday book. To find out where we are click here. This website is about Black Notley people and events; a combination of local history and what's on next. To an extent, the stuff you will find in here is self selecting. I can only tell of what I know, but several Village worthies have solemnly promised to keep me informed of forthcoming events. In the fullness of time, we may have an events diary. Meanwhile, I will update pages as I get to hear of interesting things. Tricentenary of John Ray John Ray was born in 1627; the same year Robert Boyle was born and Francis Bacon died. Boyle was the founder of modern chemistry, and Bacon was the originator of the modern scientific method which linked experimentation to rational argument. In the preface to his book on British plants published in 1690, Ray gave thanks to God that he was born in this era, when Bacon’s idea of experimentation and logic combined had replaced the previous philosophy of logical argument alone. Argument and discussion will only take you so far, and it was Ray's belief that knowledge should be based on observation and experiment, rather than discussion alone. Ray died in 1705 and the Village celebrated his life and works with a programme of events, a book and a sculpture. The next thing to celebrate will be the 100th anniversary of the Vine Pub burning down; what shall we do to commemorate that? Click here for more information. Black Notley Parish Council Until their own website is up and running, blacknotley.info will be the host for Black Notley Parish Council. To find out more about the Council and their business click here, or on the link at the top of the page.
